ACFL Division 3

We hosted Kilbeggan in Round 6 of the league on Saturday evening in Bun. After the heavy rain on Friday, the pitch was in excellent condition. An absorbing game ensued and both teams are to be commended for a tough and physical battle with the sides deadlocked at 1:11 apiece at the full time whistle.

Bun started the game brightly and had the first point on the board from John Kiernan after a fine patient move involving Luke Kiernan and Simon Moorehead who set up John to fire over from just inside the arc.

We were then dealt two early injury blows when Noel Yourell and Liam Mitchell had to leave the field of play to be replaced by Gavin Lyons and Cian Tighe respectively. Both Gavin and Cian would go on to have excellent performances but special mention to Cian who found himself in the new position of goals. His kick outs were excellent and he also pulled off a point blank save at a crucial juncture in the second half.

The first half continued to be nip and tuck. A flowing move ended with Finian Newman palming over the bar. This was followed by an excellent two point free from Aidan Finnan. This was followed by a point from Mark Donnelly after he was played in by Kenny Conroy. Finnan converted a 45 before Simon Moorehead produced a piece of superb play on the endline to play in Conroy who fired over. Bun went in 0:07 to 0:06 ahead at the short whistle.

Kilbeggan started the second half strongly and would lead 1:09 to 0:07 after ten minutes of the half. Bun, to their credit, fought back strongly and started to win some key breaking ball in midfield. John Kiernan powered through the middle to fire over their first point of the second half and this helped them build a platform. It was at this point Cian Tighe pulled off a huge point blank save to keep Bun in the match.

Ronan Scally then made a strong run through the middle of the Kilbeggan defence and was played in by Finian Newman before taking a nice sidestep to finish low to the net. A great team goal to leave one in it with ten minutes to play. Aidan Finnan followed with a two pointer from play to leave Bun a point ahead.

Kilbeggan responded with a neat point from play before another patient Bun move resulted with Ken Conroy kicking from outside the arc. His effort was tipped over the bar by Kilbeggan’s goalkeeper. Some confusion emerged over whether this should be a one or two point score. In the end Barry Kelly determined it to be a one point score.

Kilbeggan pushed hard for the equaliser and kicked a free to bring the sides level as the game entered injury time. A late free from 50 metres by Finnan dropped short as Barry Kelly sounded the full time whistle.

Both sides will feel they had the chances to take both points on offer but will still be happy to take a point each from the game. Bun head to Moate for their next outing in the league in two weeks time.

Team: Liam Mitchell, Conor Newman, Dave Newman, Ronan Scally, Enda Newman, John Kiernan, Shane McGovern, Simon Moorehead, Noel Yourell, Luke Kiernan, Finian Newman, Ken Conroy, Mark Donnelly, Aidan Finnan & Brian Maguire. Subs: Gavin Lyons for Yourell, Cian Tighe for Mitchell, Eoin McGowan, Jonny Nolan & Gordon Medforth.

ACFL Division 7

We hosted Ballinagore in Division 7 of the league on Tuesday last. Played in ideal conditions both sides produced some quality football with scores to match. Playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half, Ballinagore led by 0:08 to 0:03 at the short whistle.

The second half was a tight affair and a couple of late goal chances would have ensured a narrow win for Bun but the away side held on to record a 0:12 to 0:08 win. This was an excellent opportunity for some of the younger members of the panel to get valuable game time and all players on duty acquitted themselves very well.

Team: Tommy Murphy, Conor Newman, Luke Kiernan, Eoin McGowan, Liam Mitchell, Enda Newman, Brian Maguire, Gordon Medforth, Conor Scally, Gavin Lyons, Oisin Finn, Mark Donnelly, Cian Tighe and Finian Newman.
