Junior Championship Round 2
We travelled to Springfield on Sunday to take on Ballycomoyle in Round 2 of the Championship. Played in warm conditions at the well appointed venue both teams were lucking to claim the vital two points on offer.
Having lost their opening game to St. Joseph’s, Ballycomoyle made a bright start and had the opening score of the game from play. Barry O Mara responded with a point from a free before Ballycomoyle edged ahead again. O Mara responded with a fine mark after been found with a long ball by John Kiernan.
Ballycomoyle edged ahead again, this time with a pointed mark of their own. O Mara again replied, a fine score from play after some good defending by Bun and a fast break forward. Another Ballycomoyle free pushed them ahead again before Aidan Finnan found Ken Conroy in space who fired over a trademark score off the left.
As half time approached, Ballycomoyle pointed a free from close in to leave them 0:05 to 0:04 at the short whistle.
Bun started the second half much brighter and as the sun increased so too did Bun’s fight for the breaking ball. O Mara profited from some fine play to fire over the equalising score. Pushing the opponents kick out reaped rewards when Aidan Finnan fired over to put Bun in front for the first time in the match.
John Kiernan ventured forward to kick a fine score from play after some good work by Conroy and Finnan to set him up. Finnan added another point from play as Bun enjoyed a purple patch to leave them 0:08 to 0:06 ahead after 40 minutes played.
Ronan Scally made another telling run forward to set up Darragh Lyons with a neat score off his left foot. Ballycomoyle responded with two quick points to set up a grand finale last ten minutes.
Barry O Mara pointed a free to leave two points in it before Peter Tormey marked his introduction with a left footed point from play. Ballycomoyle refused to wilt and kicked the next two scores to leave one in it. They had the chance to equalise but their effort dropped short and from their Bun worked the ball up the field to create a fine move that involved Finnan, Tormey and O Mara to set up the recently introduced Fintan Finnan to kick the insurance point!
While this wasn’t a high scoring game, Bun will be glad to have come through this hard fought battle and ultimately get their second win in a week in this year’s Championship. Castletown Finea are up next in a forthnight.
